  • Use appropriate terminologies in the identification of gemstones.
  • Identify the nature, group, and variety of commonly available gems.
  • Used and handled various gemological instruments like refractometer, polariscope, microscope, hydrostatic balance, spectroscope, dichroscope, etc., employed for gemological testing.
  • Identify cut and polished gemstones using instruments.
  • Distinguish different color zones typical of gemstones.
  • Explain the names/terms used in both local and international markets.

SKILL PROFICIENCY DETAILS

Synthetic and imitation gems have been a part of the gem market for centuries. There is a need for people to become aware of the gemstones they are buying and gain appropriate knowledge of gemstone identification methods.

  • Refractometer: This allows the student to check the refractive index of gemstones, which is one of the most authentic and reliable ways to identify gem species.
  • Polariscope: Helps the student separate double-refractive stones from single-refractive ones, making the search list shorter.
  • Spectroscope: A compact instrument used to check the absorption spectrum of light by gemstones, essential for gemstone identification.
  • Dichroscope: Shows two different pleochroic colors in one direction, helpful in identifying gemstones.
  • Microscopic Study of Inclusions: Helps separate synthetic gems from natural ones.

KNOWLEDGE PROFICIENCY DETAILS

In a laboratory-like setting, the Gemstone Identification Course covers:

  • Gem identification is based on scientific concepts.
  • The use and operation of gemological instruments in the gem testing process.
